“Filled Emptiness”

Full empty spaces are vast landscapes where immense and mysterious spaces are sculpted in a way they can no longer be found here in Belgium, with its small-scale built-up plots of land. Spaces as metaphors for loneliness, an open mind that sees fullness: full empty spaces. When the eye gets used to the flatness of the land or water, shapes and colours begin to form in fine nuances. Uncountable tones of light and colour slowly begin to be discerned, like on the wide waters in Zeeland in the Netherlands, the contrast of light and dark, backlight like at the river Scheldt in Antwerp, where the other riverbank, the left one, lays bare in such an image, a world of meaning, when the sun is setting.
That lonely world with one or more figures becomes touchable, tangible, man as a minute little part, locked up in it.
A lot of flat land means a lot of sky. The continuously changing or menacing light of moving clouds, playing and reflecting on the water or earth; dark evening skies over fields strengthen the atmosphere of space, indistinctness and strangeness! Sky, light and water are silhouettes laden with feelings.
The island of Bonaire belongs to another world. Meaningful spaces in colour tones like on another planet. Space surrounded by rocks and closed in beaches, a lonely figure gets lost in the water.
Breton spaces, immense, endless beaches and wild waters, where man and nature are intertwined and only the rustling of the latter, silence disturbed, just like centuries ago. Man against Nature’s violence: standing tall, playing, enjoying, a vast playing bank of individuals.
